This month, in Baby Art, we will focus on body movement as an art medium, using our bodies and their dynamic potential for creation – rolling, jumping, sliding, dancing… In so doing, we will bring two different visual languages – body movement and art – together. A space of stimuli and games, Baby Art encourages babies and their families to interact as they explore the galleries of the Museum.
Walking around Richard Serra’s giant sculptures in The Matter of Time can be a unique experience. Using color ribbons, we will paint in the air as we explore Serra’s installation.
In this action-oriented, experimental workshop, we will use both slow-motion and energetic strokes to show movement with color on paper. Our moving bodies will fill the space with color as we carry objects dripping with paint with us, leaving our pigment-loaded marks on the floor and the walls, and rolling colorful balls to be mesmerized by their trail.

Play Experiences: Playing with Spare Parts 

In this free play session, inspired by Hilma af Klint’s oeuvre, you will use spare parts to delve into a hands-on exploration of abstract art.
What can you find in this room? A series of art installations made with various objects, which you can handle to plunge into creation in an intuitive way, discovering the hidden possibilities of shapes and materials. Using spare parts, both big and small, that make circles, ovals, lines, triangles, spirals, and the list goes on, you will be able to portray your invisible world in this free, non-directive play activity.
Wonder, an emotion often aroused by art, will be the common thread in this activity using spare-part installations, feeding on the human tendency to manipulate variables, and kindling curiosity with answers to the ever-renewing question “What if…?”. In other words, this play experience encourages you to give free rein to your imagination, empowered by the stimulating environment provided by the Museum.
This activity is meant to be ephemeral, happening in the here and now, without materializing into something permanent, inviting you to explore and create at your own pace as you partake in the global excitement spurred by the game.

Art Adventures: Hidden Beauty

Looking at the work of Hilma af Klint, we will see how colors and shapes can express things that are invisible to the naked eye, such as ideas and feelings. We will explore af Klint’s magical world, finding inspiration in her unusual forms and colors. Letting our imagination run wild, we will make a large-scale painting, trying a variety of painting techniques. After choosing from abstract drawings, curved and straight lines, we will apply the wet-on-wet method to see how colors flow and blend, bringing about spellbinding transitions between different hues and forms. Creativity without limits!

Drawing for Beginners: That Which Cannot Be Seen

In this part of the course, we will face a new challenge: drawing what cannot be seen, for drawing can render things without an image visible.
We will take a look at different types of drawing, at the drawing techniques used by artists and the purposes of drawing. We will play games to capture lights, shadows, and sounds in our drawings as we try different points of view. We will also learn a variety of drawing techniques – charcoal, crayon, India ink –, as well as different drawing surfaces.
Conceived of as a series of progressive workshops focusing on different concepts and methods, the course encourages participants to enjoy art by making art, suggesting a closer, proactive look at artwork.

In the exhibition Hilma af Klint, we will find the mysterious symbols that hint at the artist’s connection to the supernatural and the magical world. And we will become students at the School of Wizardry, in an effort to understand the cryptic language behind these symbols.
In this fun activity, we will meet a series of charming witches—both as characters and for real! Also, we will witness spells and charms, potions included. Finally, we will make our own hats—an item no magician can do without.

Course in Digital Imaging: Learning to Look

In this course, you will learn how to tell stories using digital images, engaging in an active and creative use of photography. In addition, you will develop a critical look at the constant presence of images in modern society and expand the ways in which reality can be seen.
You will be encouraged to work in groups when planning your images, coming up with creative solutions for your assignments and resorting to experimentation, creativity, and play. In search of inspiration, you will visit the Museum’s exhibitions, as well as the works in the Museum Collection.
You are welcome to bring your mobile phone or tablet along to take pictures. If you cannot bring your own device, you will get a camera from us. To sign up for this course, a parent or guardian must sign a form authorizing picture taking during the workshops.
The course is conceived of as a series of progressive workshops to unfold throughout the year.
January 26: Filtering Reality
If you could change what you see – the real things that surround you – by adding filters to reality, how would you change the world around you?
February 2: Images Coming to Life
Using animation and video to add movement to images. Just design a step-by-step sequence and your ideas will dance before your eyes!
February 9: Playing with Light for Magical Effects
Let’s manipulate light and shadow to create effects on the objects appearing on our pictures. That is the magic of light: it changes the whole picture!
February 16: How Do We Look at Things?
Using framing to create in-focus or out-of-focus images – and finding different ways of looking at the same room. The way we look at things can change our perception of them. Expanding our point of view to transform the way we see reality and find new meanings.
February 23: One Picture, Many Stories
If you had to send a message in a bottle using a picture, what picture would you choose? What story would you like your picture to tell?

In this workshop, you will transform the space around you by making installations inspired by the works of Jenny Holzer and other artists who play with light and dark.
In a tour of the relevant works from the Museum Collection, you will discover the power of light and color, how they can affect our moods and feelings. Then, you will design your own installation, aimed at arousing unique sensations. Finally, you will work in groups to make columns using letters, figures, patterns, and series, thus creating a space to walk around and the experience of a massive group installation.

In this activity, we will see how appearances can be deceiving as we embark on an inner journey in search of our true selves.
First of all, we will enter a world of unconventional princes and princesses — free-spirited men and women who know who they are and what they like. Each of us will choose our own colors and shapes to make a design involving clothes, body parts, even messages we feel represent us. Paul Pfeiffer’s wood carvings capturing Justin Bieber’s physical essence will be our inspiration.
Our designs will represent who we really are beneath our outer layers. Thus, the activity will help us connect with our essence and let our inner selves appear in a work of art.

Let’s change all stories in one fell swoop! Let’s transform them and chose the versions we like best!
We just need to cut, paste, and delete. This is, in fact, what American artist Paul Pfeiffer does. Did you know? He edits pictures of sports stars and other celebrities for awesome transformations. He cuts, moves, and pastes parts of photos and videos so that the resulting work is something completely new. We will follow in his footsteps, choosing between a prominent and an invisible role for ourselves in the tales we tell. In so doing, we will find out how a story can have many different versions, how it can be told in many different ways. Also, we will learn how to play with images, concealing some parts and highlighting others for the most amazing, unexpected effects. Come and join us in this workshop where creativity, imagination, and magic will reign supreme!

Creative Lab: Found Images

Following in the footsteps of Paul Pfeiffer, in this workshop we will use images from the entertainment industry to tell our own stories.
Exploring Pfeiffer’s world through his photographs and videos, we will learn to use a curious technique known as “found footage,” which is the appropriation of footage for use in new films and other works, where it takes on a new meaning. We will use images of sports stars and other heroes to make a collaborative collage. By altering the images’ original context, we will tell new stories, with multiple new meanings. While doing this, we will discuss some of the key concepts to understand the work of Paul Pfeiffer, such as celebrity culture, stardom and anonymity, and mass entertainment.

Family Yoga

Inspired by Yves Klein’s Large Blue Anthropometry, we will lie back to enjoy the essence of winter, when shorter days demand an unhurried rhythm.
It is the time of year to embrace the pause, lie still, and find the peace that arises from a calm experience. Engaged in mindful practice, we will try a series of asanas that conjure up the right energy for the season. The blend of conscious movement and breathing techniques will lead us to a space of peace and quiet where we will feel in sync with the natural rhythm of winter. Physical practice and the magic of art will be our guides in this symbolic trip to the blue heart of this season.
Aimed at the whole family, these classes use art and yoga poses to play, share, and connect. Art can help us all — kids and adults alike — attain wellbeing, improve our quality of life, and develop our emotional intelligence while connecting to our creative essence and exploring conscious movement.
