Course in Digital Imaging: Learning to Look

Admission

Individual sessions: €7 Museum Members / €9 general public

In this course, you will learn how to tell stories using digital images, using photographically actively and creatively. In addition, you will develop a critical perspective on the constant presence of images in modern society and expand the ways in which reality can be seen.

Using photography as a medium and tool, we will look for imaginative ways to transform the reality we see at first glance and, going further, to show what we wish to convey from our own perspective.

You will be encouraged to work in groups when planning your images, coming up with creative solutions for your assignments through experimentation, creativity, and play. In search of inspiration, you will visit the Museum’s exhibitions, as well as the works in the Museum Collection. You are welcome to bring your mobile phone or tablet along to take pictures. If you cannot bring your own device, you will get a camera from us. To sign up for this course, a parent or guardian must sign a form authorizing picture taking during the workshops.

The course is conceived of as a series of progressive workshops:

March 30: The Body as Landscape: A Matter of Framing
We will put into practice the different types of photographic framing using our bodies as a motif. Abstracting our image, the folds of our clothes or our skin will turn into horizon lines, lakes, mountains, or paths.

April 6: What Can a Machine Do with Someone’s Memories?
Starting from this question posed by artist Refik Anadol, we will analyze the image in the era of artificial intelligence. We will dive and delve into the work of this artist, paying attention to our experience with all five senses. We will write down a series of free notes and then input them into an image generator and reflect on the results.

May 11: Dark is Beautiful
In the darkness, many things are concealed or unnoticed at first: We will look for them and learn to capture them with our cameras. We will enter a world of mystery and discovery, making the invisible visible.

May 18: Water, Reflections, Bubbles
Taking water as our theme, we will learn to photograph its movement in high definition. We will explore its reflections, looking for different perspectives and coming up with games where our brain will have to decide what is real and what is not. The thousands of reflections of Anish Kapoor’s sculpture will inspire our investigation.

May 25: Photocall
We will learn how to design our own space to take pictures, considering the lighting, the background, the arrangement of figures… for a very fun last session where we are the stars!
