Learning Through Art 1999

06.16.1999 - 08.27.1999

160 students in primary schools using the three linguistic teaching models took part in the Learning through Art program in the 1998–99 academic year. The program was initiated at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1970, created by patron of the arts Natalie K. Lieberman in response to the elimination of arts education in New York City’s public elementary schools. Natalie K. Lieberman was convinced that children learn in a wide variety of ways: by listening, talking, acting and creating. She embodied her conviction in the Learning through Art program, in which participating artists stimulate the children’s creativity by helping them to create artworks. It was soon seen that the workshops were effective in developing reading, writing, and language skills, and more importantly in fortifying the children’s self-esteem and personal growth. In 1998 the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao adapted the arts program to the needs and interests of public primary schools in the Basque Autonomous Community.
