This is a two-part activity, focusing on artwork restoration and shipping. First of all, we will take a look at the Museum’s sculpture storage, where we will find the sacks from Jannis Kounellis’s installation in the Collection. Then, we will visit the building’s loading dock and take a look at a specialized truck for artwork transportation.
Are you familiar with Untitled, the installation by Greek artist Jannis Kounellis in the Museum Collection? In this tour, you will see how the 120 burlap sacks that make this Arte Povera masterpiece are handled for conservation: the sewing of the original holes and the use of polyester bags inside to reinforce their structure and increase their durability.
Artwork transportation is a delicate process, done by specialized firms who keep the art safe and sound while it is being shipped. For ground transportation, special vehicles are used, furnished with state-of-the-art technology, in addition to the crates needed to handle the pieces with care. In this tour, you will visit the Museum’s loading dock and take a look at one of these trucks. In sum, you will dive into the backstage of art logistics, from the moment when an artwork is loaned to the moment when it is displayed in one of our galleries.
