Oma Forest
Kortezubi, Bizkaia
Near the caves of Santimamiñe in the neighborhood of Oma, in Kortezubi, there is a unique place known as the ‘Bosque Animado’ (or the enchanted forest), one of the best-known creations of Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola. It is an expression of “Land Art,” a creative movement that emerged towards the end of the 1970s that transfers the artist’s work into a natural setting, using the landscape as a frame, format, and raw material for the artist.
As you walk through the wood figures appear before your eyes: sometimes the figure of a single tree is an entity in itself, while in other cases you need to observe a number of trees at once to understand the image. Your perception of the figures changes depending on the point of observation and the figures transform themselves. Basically, it is a “personalized” visit in which the artist makes the visitor the protagonist of his work.
