El Peine del Viento
Donostia-San Sebastián, Euskadi
A set of sculptures on the seafront called ‘el Peine del Viento’ (Comb of the Wind) is probably the best-known creation of the San Sebastian-born sculptor Eduardo Chillida; it is certainly one of the most popular places in the city.
It consists of three nine-ton pieces of steel anchored into the rocks and lashed by the waves of the Bay of Biscay at the western end of the Bay of La Concha. Jets of air and water surge out of the ground to make up what some people call “Chillida’s organ”. The power of the sea creates a geyser effect through the stones, with a wide range of different sounds created by the coming and going of the waves.
