Basque and Spanish Contemporary Art
03.27.1999 - 07.04.1999
Basque and Spanish Contemporary Art concentrates on the growing collection of contemporary Basque and Spanish art, with particular emphasis being placed on works that are presented for the first time since the Museum was inaugurated.
The selection on display in galleries 301, 302, 303, and 304 brings out the affinities between these artists clearly, many of whom work in the avant-garde of international artistic production. The fragile creations of young Basque artist Javier Pérez, Levitas and Mask of Seduction (Máscara de seducción), transmit his interest in transcending limits and exploring unknown areas of the human body. In sharp contrast, the monumental works of Catalonian artist Susana Solano—Here I am, Bany de les Cariàtides (Aquí estoy, Bany de les Cariàtides), Backs to the Wall (De espaldas a la pared), and her more recent Jaosokor—use everyday images of the world around us as a starting point for her huge and yet somehow compact works.
One of the main attractions of the installation is the presentation of Francesc Torres’s 1993 multimedia seven-channel assembly involving video, sound and sculpture, entitled Too Late for Goya.
