American and European Postwar Art
06.24.2000 - 10.15.2000
American and European Postwar Art highlights the major artistic currents from the mid-twentieth century, including works from Europe and the United States. Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism, the main artistic developments of this post-war era, arose simultaneously and shared the tendency to reject traditional forms of composition and order in favor of a more gestural and expressive painting.
These galleries create a dialogue not only with the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, but also between the United States and Europe. This installation of works by artists such as Alberto Burri, Eduardo Chillida, Asger Jorn, Yves Klein, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and Antoni Tàpies, among others, shows the surprising similarities between the work of artists who worked on far-distant continents at the beginning of the cold war era.
