A labyrinth is a messy, challenging space where we need to use our imagination. They are usually associated with multiple paths, adventure, and having fun. It is often difficult to find our way out of a maze.

The sculptures that make Richard Serra’s series The Matter of Time might resemble labyrinths. They are magical structures that morph into something different when we enter them and find our way around them, giving us a feeling of space in motion. In this activity, we will explore Serra’s sculptures using at least three of our senses: sight, hearing, and touch. Keeping our minds open, we will let them surprise us with every step we take. Then, drawing inspiration from Serra’s creations as well as from classical designs like the Labyrinth in Crete, built to hold the Minotaur in, we will make our own mazes for more surprises and fun.
